Crystal Hartman
An American Artist, born in Durango, Colorado USA, working through conceptual medias- drawing, printmaking, video installation, sculpture, painting- this art work addresses the foundations of contemporary art: conceptual art that puts the concept, materials and metaphors in the forefront. Combining historical media - drawing, printmaking (etching and lithography), sculpture - with the contemporary - video and installation - different artistic styles are approached and used to address relevant conceptual ideas. Most basically, this work is interested in perspective. What makes one viewer think of home when another thinks of swinging in the park? Why is it interesting when we find out a friend is left-handed? How do our personal histories, beliefs and dreams shape the way we interpret basic images, words and ideas. It is a pivotal time socially, religiously and politically... art ought document it as best it can. Art ought also open our eyes to new ideas, views and the whimsical associations between humans that are so often overlooked. Working on any specific idea for months at a time, eventually, the medium is chosen for relevancy and artistic meaning. Installation art allows the artist to involve the viewer with the entire environment in which the piece is shown. Allowing for variables - visual, audio, time - Crystal Hartman of Durango Colorado uses video and material installations to create an experiential conversation within the viewer; and hopefully between individuals. Contemporary art provides a stage for addressing contemporary issues, culurally relevant ideas, social and political situations and historical references. American artist Crystal Hartman is an emerging artist building the body of her work from conceptual art, installation art, video installation, sculpture, painting and drawing. The work begins with a conceptual foundation and from there addresses, artistically, each element through literal and metaphorical use of materials and language. Text is essential to the work, as is mundane daily experience, materials, and conversation. Often providing a 2D visual expeience, loaded imagery and language leave room for immediacy, contemplation and individual "editing". Drawing installations create a stage for "high art" discussion as well as space for improvisation, conceptual art questions and contemporary art discussion. Focusing on the daily mundane and the concepts that connect and seperate us all, Crystal Hartman's conceptual art draws upon the universal experiences and human condition. Referencing animals, art history, politics, and the mundane, the contemporary art is fueled by individuals and their connections, connotations and personal experiences with imagery, text and art as experience. As a contemporary artist, -Colorado artist- Crystal Hartman works to address daily rituals, cultural, media, and technology gaps, artistic rules and forums through installation and video art. On this site basic conceptual artworks from 2D form, are displayed. Installation drawings, sketchbook images, and basic intaglio prints that address immediacy, conteptual thought, multiples, metaphors, sculpture, and the origins of her completed artwork.
