| Creating contemporary art -painting, illustration, video and installation- based on concept, Crystal Hartman lives and works from her studio in Durango Colorado. BFA in Printmaking from the University of Colorado at Boulder, she studied under Clinton Cline, Sally Elliot and Robert Nauman combining historical media - etching and stone lithography- with more contemporary sculpture, video and installation. With an undergraduate research grant, Crystal traveled to Argentina to study Femininity. This resulted in an increased interest in human perspective and the connotations that define a viewers gaze. How personal histories, beliefs and dreams shape the way individuals interpret basic images, words and ideas - this is the foundation of Hartmans work. Following her research and BFA degree, she was invited to live in Barcelona Spain where she worked filming video for Null Skateboards and creating Paper Installations for local offices and apartment buildings. During BAC! Hartman showed her work at the CCCB -Center for Contemporary Culture Barcelona- and began exhibiting video installations throughout Europe. Studying, sketching and living with each focus concept for months, her contemporary and conceptual artworks grow from education in topics and ideas. |
| Installation art allows the artist to involve the viewer in the artwork, the entire environment in which the piece is shown. Allowing for variables - visual, audio, time - Crystal Hartman uses multi-media to create an experiential conversation within the viewer; and hopefully between individuals. Contemporary art provides a stage for addressing social and political issues. Text is essential to the work, as are mundane daily experiences, material makeups, and conversation. Often providing a 2D visual experience, loaded imagery and language leave room for immediacy, contemplation and individual "editing". Her earlier drawing installations have led to an interest in illustration. Working with Watercolor and Rives BFK, she began creating large abstract and illustrative paintings that brought her to a Signature Member position in the National Watercolor Society. In 2009, she founded Durango Open Studios, a tour of working art spaces in Durango Colorado. In its second year, she became a member of the Board of Directors at the Durango Arts Center, Durango Colorado and in turned the studio tour over to Shared Vision Publishing and Arts Perspective Magazine. Crystal Hartman, raised in the turquoise jewelry business by John and Estell Hartman, now designs and creates sterling silver jewelry for Durango Silver Company. Focusing on lost wax design and contemporary art adornment, each piece is hand carved, each stone, hand-cut. As a contemporary artist, Crystal Hartman works to address daily rituals, cultural, media, and technology gaps, artistic rules and forums through painting, illustration installation and video art. On this website, conceptual contemporary art by Crystal Hartman of Durango Colorado is displayed. All contemporary art work is for sale and available for exhibition. |
